Accessibility
This service is used by people in their eighties, by people with tremors, and by exhausted carers on small phones. That shapes how it is built.
What we aim for
WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Manatee County is bound to WCAG 2.1 AA under ADA Title II by 26 April 2027; we build to the newer standard so that deadline is not a scramble.
What that means in practice
- Body text is 19px, not 14px, and it can be enlarged to 200% without anything breaking.
- Every color pair on the site is measured against the contrast standard, not eyeballed.
- Nothing is communicated by color alone — a red badge always carries a word too.
- Every button and link can be reached with a keyboard, and you can always see where you are.
- Tap targets are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
- The site works with a screen reader, and forms say what went wrong in plain words.
Where we are not there yet
- The site is currently in English only. Spanish is planned for phase two.
- Some staff-facing hub screens have had less accessibility testing than the public pages.
- We have not yet completed a full audit with assistive-technology users.
If something does not work for you
Tell us and we will fix it, and in the meantime we will help you another way — by phone, or in person. You should never be shut out of this service because of how a page is built.
